On Trend: Spring,Summer 2017 Wedding Jewelry Trends

Ten years ago, I had my heart set on the most stunning necklace I’ve ever seen. It was so beautiful, it defies description. But because I’m sure you appreciate jewelry the way I do, have a look for yourself.

I wore this marvelous creation for my wedding. My entire wedding look was planned around this necklace, right down to the color of thread embroidered artfully throughout my bodice. When I first started dress shopping, I approached the daunting task with the idea that because the necklace was so fanciful and complex, my dress should be a simple and understated backdrop. But as I was trying on simple and understated dresses, they just seemed lackluster and drab compared to the necklace I would wear. When I tried on the dress I ultimately ended up buying, I knew. I had one of those fairytale experiences where I just “knew” this was the dress. It was not simple or understated. It was bold, and fussy, and some might say “too much.” But I am the queen of too much, and it’s never enough.

The right jewelry is critical to a successful wedding ensemble.  It is like icing on a cake. A cake might be delicious, but if it looks like a hot mess, who’s going to eat it? But like any wearable art, trends change and seasons shift. And jewelry is no exception to this phenomenon. Since we’re standing at the edge of spring, I thought it’d be fun to check in on the spring and summer brides this year to see what their jewelry boxes hold. What jewelry is a bride wearing on her big day this year?

The first thing to keep in mind is that all the spring/summer 2017 runways showed florals, lace, and 3-D floral embellishments. The overall look is undeniably ultra-feminine. To go with a dress like this, the jewelry needs to maintain the same tone. This type of dress does not call for an overly contemporary jewelry suite. This dress is a time for romance. Art Deco would be a smart choice here. Although Art Deco has a strongly geometric influence, and at the time was considered quite futuristic, that is no longer the case. Now it is associated with a more luxurious time – a time of romance, steamships, and cotillions. If this sounds like pure perfection to you and you’d like to keep this trend going for years to come, consider getting a wedding band that does. My personal favorite for the bride who wants the everlasting romance is Diamond Lace Wedding Ring. It literally looks like lace delicately woven out of gold, decorated with delicate diamonds. If you prefer a ladies’ wedding ring with fewer diamonds, the Venezia Lace is a great option. Even though there are two small bands of diamonds on the outer edges of the ring, the center part of the ring is carved with a floral lace pattern.

Another trend walking down the aisle is going to be volume. Gowns with full ballroom skirts and large bow embellishments are very popular. Femininity is back in the game folks, and it is not messing around this time. If your dress has a lot of volume, dainty jewelry will get lost in the midst of the satin, tulle, and silk. A smart play would be a large statement necklace. If your necklace is large, and your dress is reminiscent of a fluffy cupcake, you won’t need to wear earrings, which is perfect. The necklace can take the lead, while being on par with your dress. If you feel naked without a good pair of earrings (I know the feeling), don a classic pair of diamond studs. That is the route I took with my wedding gown and jewelry selections. I had a huge ballgown with a six foot train and an impressive collection of carats around my neck. My simple and balanced earrings gave a hint of sparkle at my ears, but they didn’t compete with the rest of the ensemble. When you are combining jewels for your wedding look, consider them supporting actors. They should never overshadow the lead actor.

Another romantic element gracing the spring/summer 2017 runway was rose quartz. Rose quartz is a beautiful stone, often thought to represent romance and love. It’s no stretch to see why brides are so captivated by the stone. The pale pink stone is often included, which means minerals present during the stone’s formation were trapped inside. In rose quartz, this often leads to a cloudy appearance. In some stones, this makes it undesirable. But in rose quartz, it leads to a dreamy, ethereal presence. Rose quartz-colored wedding gowns strode down the runway, along with some other colors, like pale blues. If you prefer a more traditional take for your wedding dress, consider incorporating the rose quartz trend with your jewelry. The pink is so light that it won’t be distracting. It will just impart a warm blush tone to your jewelry.

A bride spends months preparing for ensemble for her big day, but most of that time is spent on the dress, veil, headpiece, and hair. But the jewelry can make or break the look. Think about how incomplete your everyday outfits feel without a little sparkle here and there (or everywhere, if you’re me). No bride should feel that way about her wedding jewelry. Spend some time thinking about how you want the whole look to be perceived. And then seek out the jewels that will make that dream a reality.

 Trends and trinkets,

 Rebecca
