4 Unobvious Times You Need to Take Your Wedding Ring Off

When you got married, you probably were over the moon excited to be able to finally wear your wedding ring. Not only is it a testament of your commitment and love, but it’s beautiful! While you may want to keep the symbol of your love close at all times (and maybe show it off a bit!), there are some instances where it’s best to leave your ring behind.

Being stubborn about always wearing your wedding band is not a good idea… It’s smart to think ahead and make sure your ring will be safe. If there is a risk of it getting hurt or worse yet, you getting hurt by wearing it, take it off! Here are a few of our favorite tips to keep your ring safe.

When not to wear your gold ring...

Gold is an incredibly popular metal for wedding rings because of its malleability or softness that allows designers to create unique and customized designs. For this same reason, it is easier for gold to be bent, scratched, or worn down over time.

To protect your gold ring, don’t wear it while performing physical labor or while being exposed to harsh chemicals such as those found in cleaning mixtures or hot tubs.  Even though you can’t keep your gold ring in mint condition forever, taking your ring off during these activities can help slow the process.

Don’t wear your platinum ring when you...

Just like gold, platinum is another malleable metal that will distort more easily if exposed to large amounts of pressure. Platinum is prone to micro scratches that may not be noticeable at first, but overtime may dull your ring’s remarkable shine.

To eliminate possible distortion or damage, avoid wearing your platinum ring while doing manual work because it can bend easily. It is also advised not to handle bleach or harsh chemicals while wearing your platinum ring if it possesses a stone or diamond. These chemicals won’t hurt the platinum, but could discolor the gems.

Take your titanium ring off when...

Titanium is often known as the indestructible metal. It is the most dent, bend, and scratch resistant among ring metals, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be careful.

Be sure to take off your titanium wedding band if you’re playing intense sports, going to the gym or beach, working with abrasive substances, or performing manual labor. Keep in mind, titanium rings are not easy to fix or resize.

4 times when you really shouldn’t put a ring on it:

It may be common knowledge that you shouldn’t wear your ring when you’re putting on lotion or changing the oil in your car, but here are some unobvious times when you need to take your wedding ring off!

 Cooking

While it may be pretty obvious that you should take your ring off when you’re cleaning, doing so when you’re cooking is just as important. Removing your wedding band every time you cook may seem annoying, but it’s a good idea for sanitation purposes. Wearing your ring while cooking likely won’t cause serious damage to it, but things can get messy pretty quickly in the kitchen.

If you have a more intricate wedding band with stones or prongs or if your ring is see through, it is likely that food will end up in the crevices of your ring. Especially if you’re cooking with raw meat, consider taking off your wedding ring. But be sure to place it in a safe place far, far away from the sink

  1. Painting

By now we all know that handling chemicals while wearing your ring - no matter the metal - is not a good idea. And though it may not be the first thing that comes to mind, paint can fall under the category of chemicals.

Even if you’re exceptionally careful, getting even a speck of paint on your ring can be a real bummer. Not only does it blemish your ring, but the process of getting your ring clean isn’t an easy one. Whether you’re painting your home, an art piece, or spray painting an old piece of furniture, be sure to leave your ring out of the project. No matter how much paint gets on your ring, it would take more strong chemicals to get the paint off which can do more harm than good!

  1. Construction projects

It’s no secret that jewelry and heavy machinery don’t mix well together. If you want to avoid causing your ring to split, scratch, or crack, don’t wear your wedding band when doing manual labor. And if you’re like most people and sweat when you’re working hard, you’ll definitely want to take off your ring during your project. Sweat is prone to dull your ring’s shine and can cause your ring to slip off. The only thing worse than a damaged ring is no ring at all!

One of the biggest concerns related to rings and construction projects is not even related to what can happen to your ring… It is what can happen to your finger! Some of the worst ring-accident stories involve rings and heavy machinery. Think twice before wearing your ring on the job-site. While you want your wedding band to show that you are fully committed and off the market, it is better to go without it during construction projects to ensure its (and your) safety.

  1. Snorkeling and swimming

While you should be ecstatic to embark on your deep sea adventure, don’t forget to leave your ring behind. The salt water found in oceans is corrosive to some metals and may cause discoloration or deterioration. If snorkeling isn’t on your agenda, but taking a dip in a swimming pool is, it’s still a better choice to take your wedding ring off. Chlorine and other chemicals found in pools can ruin your ring’s metal through dents or discoloration.

Another reason to leave your ring at home during your water adventures is that most ring losses occur during water activities. Your finger size shrinks in water, so even if your ring is typically tight and snug, putting it in water may make it loose, and it can slip off more easily. Not only do you not want to ruin your ring, but you also don’t want to ruin your adventure by losing your ring!

We know it’s kind of annoying to have to think about when to wear your ring and when to take it off, but it’s worth it. Taking your ring off and putting it in a safe place during these types of activities is the best thing you can do if you want to preserve your ring’s beauty. Oh, and of course, give your ring a quick clean every once in awhile to avoid losing your ring’s unique sparkle.
