Getting Comfortable With A Comfort Fit Wedding Band Part One

Your wedding band becomes a part of who you are. Not just because it’s the outward symbol of your wedded bliss, but also because you wear it so much that it becomes an extension of you; the one accessory that goes with everything; the thing you feel naked without. So why settle for something less than perfect?

Perfection is more than how your ring looks. It’s also about how it feels and fits. The biggest favor you’ll ever do for yourself is buying a Comfort Fit wedding band. Comfort Fit isn’t a brand name or an exclusive trademark. It’s a type of ring fit. Historically, most rings are made using Standard Fit. With Standard Fit, the interior of the ring (the part that is in constant contact with your body) is flat and straight. Imagine if you were to view a cross section of the ring. The bottom of the ring (the interior) would meet the sides of the ring at a nearly 90* angle.

The biggest drawback of Standard Fit is that the stiff sharp corner is uncomfortable, especially when the ring finger curls. The crisp edges press into and pinch the tender skin on the underside of the finger. With repeated wear, this can even cause calluses. Even if this doesn’t bother the wearer, Standard Fit doesn’t allow for easy movement on the finger, which can be particularly problematic for someone who has enlarged knuckles, whether from arthritis, injury, or genetics. In these situations, what often happens is that the wearer needs to go up in size to get a ring with the right interior fit, one that goes on comfortably and stays comfortable all day.

But where Standard Fit falls flat (literally), Comfort Fit excels. With a Comfort Fit band, the interior is tapered and lifted up on the outside edges, resulting in a domed interior that mirrors the domed top/exterior of the ring. The lifted edges mean that the band effortlessly glides over fingers and knuckles. When the finger is curled, a Comfort Fit band will be seamlessly nestled into the contours of the hand. No pain, no discomfort, and no pinching.

Along with the obvious comfort benefits, Comfort Fit rings provide additional advantages over Standard Fit bands. First, it’s a matter of physics. In order to have contoured edges and still achieve a certain ring width, more metal is needed. This gives rings a nice heft. They feel good and solid on the hand. Second, because of the increased metal content, Comfort Fit bands are more durable than their Standard Fit counterparts. With a thicker midsection, a Comfort Fit ring can withstand what even the busiest and hardest working spouse throws at it.

While the interior of Comfort Fit bands all follow essentially the same map, there are some interesting variations that allow the wearer to express their own personality. The Flat Comfort Fit provides the best of both worlds: a Flat Comfort Fit ring is the reverse of a Standard Fit. Where a Standard Fit band is flat on the inside and domed on the outside, the Flat Comfort Fit is tapered and lifted on the interior surface and flat with strong crisp corners on the outside surface. This gives the look for a Standard Fit, with may resonate more with someone who appreciates contemporary styling, but pairs that look with the luxury afforded by the sloped and curved Comfort interior.
