Something Romantic This Way Comes: Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

I know it’s hard to think about another holiday, what with Christmas and New Year’s just barely behind us (don’t lie…some of y’all still have your Christmas decorations up. It’s alright), but the fact is, the most romantic of holidays is nearly upon us. Valentine’s Day is in just a few weeks. So fellas, instead of stressing out about the perfect gift for your lady or the most romantic evening this side of Hollywood, let me give you a little tip: jewelry. It’s the gift that is sure to impress and excite your girl. Because this season of lovey-dovey emotions warms my heart and the die-hard romantic in me is living the dream, I am devoting today’s blog entirely to Valentine’s Day jewelry gift ideas.

It is important to note that Valentine’s Day has been closely linked with love since the Roman Empire (although this association became more tight-knit in England beginning in the 14th century).  Some of the exact details remain mysteries, but based on what we know, we can be sure that Valentine’s Day is a holiday (although not officially recognized as a public holiday, like Christmas or Memorial Day, by any country) celebrated on February 14th. This holiday is more formally known as St. Valentine’s Day or the Feast of St. Valentine and honors two Saint Valentines: Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni. Most notable was St. Valentine of Rome, who was imprisoned for performing wedding ceremonies for soldiers for whom this would have been forbidden. While it prison, it is said that he healed his captor’s daughter. When he left prison, he supposedly left a note signed “Your Valentine.” It is easy to see how our current cultural celebration of Valentine’s Day got its roots, from the tantalizing scandal of forbidden love and hand-written valentines.

Centuries later, in Europe, the day evolved into a day when couples celebrated and professed their love by giving candy, flowers, and metal key trinkets. These keys represented the key to unlocking their heart. For you guys who want to truly spoil your gal, consider the Princess Crisscross Wedding Band. Don’t be fooled by the name; you don’t need to be getting married to wear this beauty. Part of this ring’s allure lies in its versatility. Although stunning as a women’s wedding ring, this ring is the perfect diamond right hand ring. What I love most about this ring is that it feels to me like a carefully guarded lock, to which you are the only key. The center princess (square) cut diamond seems to be the lock to your girl’s heart. And the crisscrossing arms of the ring keep it safe. But you, her noble knight, are the key to unlocking it. The romance is undeniable, but it’s more covert. I adore the majesty and subtlety of it.

Perhaps a ring isn’t the right gift; that’s okay. When it comes to jewelry, you have lots of options. My birthday is a mere eleven days before Valentine’s Day, so on the years that I get jewelry, it serves as a dual-purpose preset. The year I turned 30, for example, my husband upgraded my diamond studs to a pair that is one carat total weight. To make sure we’re on the same page, diamond earrings are measured in their total weight. So my one carat diamond studs are comprised of two studs, each containing one half-carat diamond. These earrings blew my socks off. If you want to give your significant other a similar thrill, I thoroughly recommend diamond studs. One diamond is beautiful, but two are better. And when they’re together, the pairing is unmistakable perfection. This is a brilliant metaphor for a well-matched couple. You’re each wonderful by yourselves, but together? Perfection. Bet you’ll never look at a simple pair of studs the same.

Another classic gift I love for Valentine’s Day is a bracelet. A lovely tennis bracelet has always been a high style bar in my eyes. It doesn’t have to be too flashy (unless that’s her style, because for some of us, that’s how we like things). The elegant, graceful drape of an artfully considered tennis bracelet is the epitome of class. And that is how you should think about your woman. She is the epitome of style and grace in your eyes and a tennis bracelet is a fetching piece of jewelry that mirrors that adoration.

Buying a piece of jewelry for Valentine’s Day can get overwhelming if you don’t have help. I hope I’ve given you a few things to think about. But if you’re still unsure of how to proceed, remember that there is always help. If you live in southeast Michigan, stop in to Andre’s Fine Jewelers. The jewelry experts there will help pair you with the piece of jewelry that fits your lady’s style and your budget. The showroom is in downtown Brighton, at 425 W. Main Street. If your curiosity about Andre’s Fine Jewelers has been piqued by my constant and well-deserved praise, give them a call at 810-225-1414.

 Lovin’ this lovey-dovey holiday,

 Rebecca
