Trending: What's Hot in Wedding Jewelry

Every bride fancies herself a princess on her wedding day. Some brides opt for over-the-top ball gowns, with beading, lace, embroidery, and a 10 foot long train (that was me). Some go for something a little more understated, like a simple silk satin sheath. However she is dressed, she is radiant, sparkling with joy and radiating light and vivacity. Oh no, wait, that’s her jewelry blinding me from across the room. Accessories can make or break an ensemble and your wedding is the one time that you will always get it right, because every bride is beautiful.

The glowing bride’s jewelry is like the dazzling icing on a five-tier, expertly decorated cake masterpiece and a lot of planning goes into choosing the baubles that will accent her on her waltz down the aisle to meet her forever soulmate. Trends change with the tides of time, so read on for some 2016 trends in wedding jewelry.

Something Blue…or Green or Red or…

Colored gemstones are a gorgeous way to showcase some flair in your wedding look. Wedding dresses, which are usually white, cream, ivory, blush, or some other fair neutral, are a perfect backdrop for some show-stopping flashes of color. Don’t opt for diamonds because you think colored stones will distract from your ethereal look. Instead, reframe the idea of colored stones as a great way to incorporate your wedding colors. Magenta was one of my summer wedding’s colors, and how fetching would I have been if I had chosen some lovely pink sapphire drop earrings?

Also, the trendf colored gemstones instead of a diamond as the center stone in an engagement ring is really picking up steam. If your mate is cutting-edge and is blazing the trend trails by presenting you with an emerald engagement ring (like Jackie’s), you might find that wearing other jewelry to match your engagement ring is just the right choice for your nuptials.

Moonstone and Opals

Moonstone is a gem whose legendary opalescent sheen ancient Romans believed was the result of solidified rays of moon light. Romantic theory, but that heavenly glow is actually a visual phenomenon caused by thin layers of feldspar. No matter the cause, moon beams or feldspar, moonstone lends a truly luxurious, albeit underrated, brilliance to wedding jewelry. Opals have a similar sheen, although theirs appears to be closer to the surface, while moonstone’s opalescence seems trapped in layers deep inside the stone. I like moonstone and opal especially well because they provide a welcome alternative to pearls. I love pearls, don’t get me wrong. But opals, and moonstones even more so, have multiple layers of subtle color incorporated in their midst. So if your dress is blush instead of white or ivory, moonstone and opals will play very nicely with that pink undertone. They are like color chameleons. Your dress’s color and tone will highlight and bring out the subtle colored beauty of moonstone and opal.

Moonstone and opals give a fresh take on a lavish classic. Pearls have been a go-to for the elite since sixteenth century England. And although these little sea treasures will continue to stand the test of time, the modern bride has a couple of tricks up her sleeve for achieving the lustrous pearl look with updated jewelry featuring more cutting-edge gems, like moonstone and opals.

Cuffs and Collars

A good pendant is hard to beat, especially if your dress is a deep v or a sweetheart neckline. But if you’re rocking a straight strapless gown or an impeccably cool one shoulder number, consider going off the beaten path and choosing a collar. A collar is generally more substantial and sturdy. Gemstones and diamonds are often featured prominently, with every slight turn of the bride’s graceful neck lighting a thousand shimmery fires from her baubles. Collars usually hug the clavicle (the collar bone, hence the very clever name for this necklace style). A choker is another lovely alternative to a pendant or drop necklace. A choker actually sits up on the neck and would be best suited to a strapless or thin strapped gown.

While we’re on the subject of substantial statement-making jewelry, how about ornamenting your wrist with an effortlessly stylish cuff? Think of the cuff as the older cousin you idolized growing up. A cuff is a beautiful bracelet update. It features the same attention to detail and splendor as other bracelet styles, but it has a more commanding presence that will leave onlookers envious and frantically searching their smartphones for a copycat

Whether you opt for a simple strand of pearls with some amazing ruby tear drop earrings or a moonstone pendant and cuff bracelet, your wedding is your most memorable opportunity to wear extravagant finery. Whatever you choose will be just the right thing for your big day.
