How to Determine Your Ring Size | Wedding Bands | Timeless Wedding Bands

When ordering a ring online it is important to determine the ring size in advance so that it is sure to be a good fit. Luckily, it is very easy to measure your own finger at home to find an approximate ring size. The following tips will help you get a good idea of the ring size you should be looking for.

Please note that rings with a pattern that continues all the way around the band are almost impossible to resize, so please check the required size using our complementary ring sizer before ordering if you have any doubt regarding the size.

Before You Measure to Find Your Ring Size

  • The width of your finger will change depending on your body temperature and overall condition. Follow these tips to increase the accuracy of your ring measurement.
  • Measure your ring finger at the end of the day.
  • Do not measure when you are too hot or too cold.
  • Pregnancy, as well as certain medications, can cause the fingers to swell. Keep this in mind while measuring.
  • Measure for ring size multiple times.
  • If the knuckles on the ring finger are large, order a ring that is smaller than the knuckles, but a bit larger than the ring size. That way the ring will go on, but not slip off.
  • Remember that rings come in half sizes as well. If your measurement falls between two sizes you can order a half size.
  • If there are two possible sizes to choose from, always choose the larger size ring.

How to Measure and Determine a Ring Size

This is a very simple method for quickly determining your approximate ring size at home.

Materials:

  • Paper or nonstretch string
  • Scissors
  • A pen
  • Ruler

Method:

1. Cut a thin strip of paper or a piece of string about six inches long.
2. Wrap the paper or string around the base of the finger you want to measure, being careful not to stretch the material.
3. Mark the spot where the material overlaps to form a complete circle.

Inches Millimeters US Ring Size
1 13/16 46 4
1 15/16 49.2 5
2 1/16 52.4 6
2 1/8 54 7
2 1/4 57.2 8
2 5/16 58.7 9
2 7/16 61.9 10
2 9/16 65.1 11
2 5/8 66.7 12
2 3/4 69.9 13
2 7/8 73 14

4. Measure the length of the string or paper and compare the measurement to the chart to determine the US ring size.
5. Make sure to compare the finger size to the size of the knuckle to ensure that the ring will go on the finger.

This measurement should be used as a guideline only. Remember that a stretchy string, or too stiff paper could result in a ring size that is over between a half to a full size off. For your convenience, Timeless Wedding Bands offers a free ring sizer that can be used instead of an athome method in order to get an accurate measurement.

Tips for Determining a Ring Size as a Surprise

Sometimes it is more fun to buy a ring as surprise. In order to do this you may need to employ some sneaky investigative tactics. These tips can help:

  • Ask first It is possible that parents, family members or friend will know the ring size of the person you are buying for. It is always a good idea to ask first when possible.
  • Measure a current ring If the person you are planning to surprise has a ring that they wear on the finger you want to measure, you can measure that ring instead.
  • Be super sneaky If the first two methods don’t yield good results you will have to get very sneaky. Try making a game of jokingly tying string around the finger you want to measure. You can say it is as a reminder of something, or a funny promise ring. Make sure you mark the string and measure it when it comes off the finger.
