Standing the Test of Time: Unforgettable Famous Wedding Rings
The wedding ring is a lasting symbol of matrimonial bliss, at least for a time. No matter what happens in some high-profile couplings, one thing stands the test of time (and jewelry-snob blog writers): the wedding ring. Some rings, for a variety of reasons, seem to really resonate with people. We appreciate their size and luxury, sure, but sometimes it’s more about just how beautiful or storied the ring is. I’ve compiled my favorites into a short list, which I have selected for their diversity, history, and elegance. For my top three selections, we’ll go in chronological order, since there is no way I could pick a favorite. We’ll start with Audrey Hepburn. Audrey Hepburn has become synonymous with class, elegance, and understated sophistication. It should come as no surprise that her wedding ring embodied all of these admirable ...Read More »

Set For Life: Diamond Settings
I had the good fortune of having worked at a jewelry store that specialized in custom jewelry. While at work, the owner/best designer in metro Detroit and I would dream up design ideas for the engagement ring I knew was coming. I had numerous requests and since after the initial design, I was kept in the dark, I was overjoyed that when my husband popped the question, he did it with the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen. I made a lot of the choices about my engagement ring, ranging from the gold color (yellow and white two-tone) and diamond shape (oval) to the setting type. I was most specific about this: I wanted bezel set diamonds. In a bezel setting, the diamond is placed in what’s called a bezel cup, which means there is metal coming up on all sides. To set the diamond in place, the top rim of the cup is hammered down with a special tool. This ...Read More »

With This Ring, I Thee Wed: The His-and-Her story of Wedding Rings
Once married, most of us don’t give a second thought to our wedding ring traditions. We ladies get engaged, we wear a ring; we are joined in matrimony, we wear two rings. But...our husbands just get on the one ring…and it’s not until we’re mid-vows. What’s the story with that? The romantic in me loves a good love story, and so I set out to find out about this one. How did our contemporary American ideas about wedding and engagement rings come about? Way back in the day, in ancient Egypt (before even Cleopatra), hemp and reeds were used to make rings that a married couple would don. To the ancient Egyptians, circles represented eternity, and therefore the never-ending love between a husband and wife. As you might imagine, hemp and reeds aren't the most durable of materials, and over time, they will fall into disrepair. To remedy this ...Read More »
Color Me Happy: Colored Gemstones and What They Mean
When it comes to the jewel that sparkles atop your left ring finger, most people immediately think of a diamonds. Diamonds are beautiful, but they aren’t the only gem in the mine. Diamonds are prized for their internal fire (which is created by the intricate network of facets cut into the stone) and hardness. They have become synonymous with love that can withstand the pressure and periods of difficulty all marriages face. However, when thinking about your soon-to-be betrothed, if a diamond doesn’t seem to quite fit the bill, consider some colored gemstone alternatives. Colored gemstones, like emeralds, rubies, and sapphires, have a magic all their own and will truly stand out from the crowd. Going deeper, colored stones all have legends and mythical, historical, and cultural meanings attached to them. Those elements can be woven into your own ...Read More »

You’ve already answered one of the biggest, most important questions you’ll ever be asked. And with your affirmative answer, you were probably presented with an engagement ring. I salute those couples who are forging their own paths and bucking convention. So how do you choose? How do you know if you’re the type of bride who should sport a knockout sparkler of a wedding band or if you should choose an un-jeweled metal band? Honestly, this is largely a matter of taste. But to help get the wheels in your head turning, here are a couple things to ponder while you consider your wedding band options. The consideration at the top of your list should be your lifestyle. Style Spotlight: Contemporary
It has been said, many times, that everything old is new again. Fashion and jewelry are no exceptions. We’ve seen the return of circle skirts, bell bottoms, and leg warmers (for reasons I can’t honestly fathom). While these old trends are refreshed when they come back around, sometimes they haven’t developed enough modernity to appease a discerning eye (I’m looking at you, anything-from-the-1980s). Jewelry though, thankfully, takes the evolution of style and design seriously. Things don’t “come around” again like in other categories. In jewelry, it’s a full evolution. One style transforms or greatly influences another. For example, we’ve covered at great length my love affair with Art Deco jewelry. The strong architecture, the bold colors, the clean and strong lines: I love it all. So it should come as no ...Read More »
